The Magic of Moroccan Lamps
It happened while I was out searching for a gift.
I had visited several shops but couldn't find anything that truly resonated with me. I was heading back toward the station, thinking of trying again another day, when a shimmering pop-up store caught my eye and brought me to a halt. There, I found a collection of beautiful lamps—pieces that carried an exotic allure yet felt strangely nostalgic.

The essence of a Moroccan lamp lies in its rigorous, disciplined creation process. Sheets of copper or brass are heated and hammered (tankin), then intricate patterns are meticulously carved out one by one using chisels known as tagane or fret saws. From a professional perspective, these aren't just lighting fixtures; they are exquisite metal sculptures designed to channel light.
What is truly remarkable is the beauty of the shadows projected onto the walls and ceilings.
It is said that the moderate shadows created by indirect lighting add depth to a space and have a relaxing effect by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. The light leaking through the delicate openwork instantly transforms a plain, boxy room into a mystical sanctuary. It is, quite literally, the magic of light.

The colorful glass can also be custom-ordered. In Moroccan design, every color holds a specific meaning—blue symbolizes "protection against evil and the sky," while green represents "paradise." Being able to choose your own colors is a luxury unique to authentic handicrafts.
